Improving your Vocabulary

Words. Barely anyone even thinks about them. When slang came about  people just spoke in TTYL  or  OMG. It is practically the trend with our words, yet when many write for the SATs many people’s writing often gets a lower grade than usual. However, just improving vocabulary can just help. As a word enthusiast, I solely believe that at the age of 12 or 13, children should start studying for the SATs by practicing their vocabulary each day.
Here is some tips:
  1. Ask your child, to pick out a word from the dictionary at home that they are not familiar with and practice using it at least three or four times a day.
  2. As a parent, pick out books for your child, higher than their own lexile range. In school, many student take a test about every trimester to see where their reading level is at. However, if your school doesn’t do that,go on to lexile.com and pick up one of the books your child is currently reading. Type in the title in the search bar to the right. Then, try  finding books online that is out of that range. In fact, on lexile.com you can type in a higher lexile number on the bar below. Soon you’ll find a list full of books your child can read.
  3. Write. Give them a journal and give them a prompt each day. Writing is always good to put new words in play.
  4. Encourage your child to change the words to better words. For example, famous to notorious.

With these tips, you can improve any child’s vocabulary in no time. Although, if you want to improve your own vocabulary as an adult. Adapt this to your own daily lifestyle, such as force yourself to write about your day or you can even start a blog. The simplest of words can make you sound professional or even inspiring.
